Facebook launches AI tech that finds and removes ‘Inappropriate Contents’

The social media giant Facebook has become a platform to post and share different contents. With the freedom comes the exploitation of that freedom creating various inappropriate activities. So, Facebook and other social media sites have always struggled to monitor, identify and eliminate such inappropriate posts that user uploads through their account. The inappropriate contents can range from violent threats, vulgar images to inappropriate remarks.

Due to such conditions Facebook has faced harsh criticism time and again for allowing offensive and threatening posts staying up for a long time. Such disturbing posts and media can create bad influence upon other users.

Currently whenever an inappropriate post is identified the user or victim needs to report it, which is then reviewed by the Content moderators before it is deleted. This process may take a long time before the damage has already been done.

So in order to cope with this issue Facebook is rolling out a new technology that makes it effective on discovering and removing intimate posts from Facebook posted without subject’s consent.

The new technology is obviously the Artificial Intelligence implementing Machine Learning process in order to find such inappropriate content and automatically reports it to the human which still needs to further inspected by the human moderator.

So, you may be guessing how it works. The technology is trained using pictures and contents that were previously reported by the users. It is trained to recognize a nude photo, vulgar content, revenge porn or some text that consists of shaming derogatory content specifically suggesting that the posts was uploaded seeking revenge.

Similarly, Facebook has been working to combat that spread of revenge porn for years, which is also hoped to be solved with this technology. But the problem is by the time it’s reported, someone has already seen, captured or even downloaded it. Though the technology will contribute in fighting back the problem but still the technology cannot go ahead of the problem. Facebook still trains the technology with the user contributed images and historical images which clarifies that the system is still in its development phase and is still in its long way to complete success.

The system will be implemented in both Facebook and Instagram. The technology will be a great help in eradicating inappropriate post but will still rely on user reporting the contents.
